Every product you apply carries a legally required ingredient list. Those ingredients are written in a standardized international language — INCI — and ordered by a specific rule. Learning to read that list is not about memorizing chemistry. It is about knowing what belongs on your skin, what to look for, and what to leave on the shelf. Cada producto que aplicas lleva una lista de ingredientes legalmente requerida. The Rules Las Reglas
Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest concentration by weight. The first five ingredients typically make up the majority of the formula. If water (Aqua) is first, it is a water-based product. If an oil is first, it is an oil-based product. The position of an ingredient tells you how much of it is actually in the formula. Los ingredientes se enumeran de mayor a menor concentración en peso. Once an ingredient falls below approximately 1% concentration, manufacturers are legally permitted to list it in any order they choose. This means the bottom half of most labels — preservatives, fragrance, color additives, and trace actives — can be arranged however the brand prefers. A product can list an impressive-sounding active last on the label in minimal amounts while marketing itself around that ingredient. All cosmetic ingredients must be listed using their INCI name — International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. These are standardized scientific or Latin names that are the same on every label, in every country. Common translations: Aqua = Water · Ascorbic Acid = Vitamin C · Retinol = Vitamin A · Tocopherol = Vitamin E · Niacinamide = Vitamin B3 · Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice = Aloe Vera. “Fragrance” or “Parfum” is listed as a single ingredient but legally represents a proprietary blend that can contain dozens — sometimes hundreds — of individual undisclosed chemicals. This loophole exists to protect trade secrets. It is also one of the most common causes of contact dermatitis and skin sensitization. Fragrance-free means no added fragrance molecules. Unscented can still contain fragrance used to mask the smell of other ingredients. “Fragrance” o “Parfum” se enumera como un solo ingrediente pero legalmente representa una mezcla patentada que puede contener docenas — a veces cientos — de químicos individuales no divulgados. High on the label means a significant concentration of undisclosed sensitizing compounds going onto your skin with every use. This matters most for daily-use products like moisturizers, serums, and toners that sit on the skin rather than rinse off. At high concentrations, denatured alcohol is drying, barrier-disrupting, and can trigger rebound oil production in oily skin types. It is often used to make formulas feel lightweight and to enhance product absorption — but the trade-off is compromised skin health over time. Note: cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are fatty alcohols and are not the same thing. Individually, a single essential oil low on a label poses minimal risk. But combined and repeated daily, multiple essential oils can accumulate sensitization — meaning the reaction may not appear right away, but builds over time. Lavender, eucalyptus, citrus, and peppermint are among the most common culprits for contact sensitization in skincare.
